We provided 2D, 3D, media, web, branding overall creative services to the project.

Exhibition

We always assemble a team for each project drawing from a known and trusted group of sub contractors.  In the case of Heartlands  we were working with a small Client body for the project (in staffing terms), which had no curatorial or research support.  The Robinson’s shaft complex of buildings was derelict with very few collections objects in the traditional sense.  We therefore treated the whole site, which is listed Grade II*, as a ‘found object’ and we created exhibitions and multimedia environments which respected the spaces but developed a series of themes around Cornish history and culture, mining and the local community.  Because there are a number of mining heritage attractions in the south-west we felt it important to position Heartlands as a new kind of attraction.  The visitor centre which is one of the Gateways to the World Heritage Site is free to enter and this was an important part of our business planning thinking.  For area regeneration and financial reasons it was important to get large volumes of visitors to the site and then sell them other services.  This approach has proved successful with 240,00 visitors to the site since the opening in April 2012.

Working closely with the Client and the architecture team, we developed an interpretation plan for the site, principally looking at the Robinson’s complex shown here.  This is focused on:

To deliver this we engaged:

  • 2-D and 3-D exhibition designers
  • A multimedia company
  • A soundscape designer
  • A digital interactive designer
  • Content developers
  • A geology and mining specialist (who wrote the successful WHS bid)

This is complemented by a site wide signage and information strategy, which we also developed.
