Memories and Stories
The central plank of the interpretation thinking was to use the site as a 'found object'. The beauty and starkness of the buildings, the forgotten and abandoned objects were memorable and moving when we first went to the site in 2006. Click on this link to see the site derelict. This area is the Upper Winder area. For the exhibition the area has been roofed, the space lit and the cable drum has been cleaned. A safety rail has been erected but it is basically exactly as it was when the project to create Heartlands began. The treatment here is inspired by the work of Chuck Close and Bill Viola. We hear in the space stories from former miners. Some of the soundtracks are given on this page - scroll down and there are pictures of the exhibition. The soundscape and audio were created by David Prior at Liminal to SFL's direction.
Electric Winder Drum. This winder replaced the steam winder. The winder ran the lift cages for transporting the men and for bringing the ore to the surface. A double decker lift cage is shown at bottom right in the gallery, below.
